What does 'Meta' in Metaverse mean?

When Neal Stephenson coined the term Metaverse, it's believed he intended the first part of the word "meta" to mean the idea of transcending reality (as in metaphysics). Today, the term is more often used to refer to 'self-referential' or distinct from the "real-world'.

The term VR is short for Virtual Reality. The metaverse is a virtual reality where everything is virtual and independent of the real world. To fully immerse within a virtual reality, requires a headset device.
